Q&A with Vickie Simos
Why did you start writing your book?
It was suggested by a friend as therapy, for me to pen how Martial Arts (MA) helped me with improving my self-esteem and self-confidence. It was my own personal project, but was then considered for publishing when I pitched the book at the Salisbury Writing Festival. I revcieved the official offer Dec 27th 2014.
How long did it take you to finish the book?
About 7 years. I was working full-time, training and studying at the same time.
Where did you grow up?
Riverland.
How long did you live in the Riverland?
19 years too long.
How old were you when you left for the city?
19 years.
When did you take up Martial Arts and why?
15 years old, because of a boy I liked.
What are your qualifications?
Bachelor of Arts – Major in Psychology/Minor in English & Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am also a PT.
What is the nature of the business?
It’s using Martial Arts therapy and other expressive therapies as an alternative to mainstream therapy.
Do you have any other future plans?
I have recently launched Thelo Active Therapy which uses Martial Arts as a combination or alternative to mainstream therapy. In person and online counselling through Zoom, but will eventually work from a location. Furthermore, I would like to introduce this concept into schools through government funding or put together my own non-profit organization. I am also working on another book, no release date yet. I am also working on seminars, workshops, presentations and speaking at events.
